After the fall of the Roman Empire due to Germanic invasion, western Europe was fragmented into small kingdoms while the eastern part remained unified and became the Byzantine Empire. Under the rule of Charlegmagne the west was unified.However after his death,Europe was again re-fragmented.Christianity became a major aspect of Medieval European culture and was responsible for the unification of the west. The Earth and Its Peoples pgs. 252,258,260.
